The things you only find out by trying them

Two hardening steps, written, tested on the copy at home and then carried over to the real site. The steps aren't the part worth keeping. The four bugs are, and they only showed up because I actually tried things. One of them would have triggered the lockout halfway through the allowed attempts.

Three mistakes only reality knew about

A night spent building a machine that carries a client's VMs away from their hypervisor. The scripts were lovely and passed every one of my fake tests. Then I switched them on for real, and they showed me three flaws no fake test could ever have found, including one that skipped machines in silence.
